SELF-TAPEs.

1. Choose any 2 scenes - from any character - in Episodes 1-3.

— I know there are characters with distinct, cultural names that you’ll be drawn to based on where you’re from, however, at this stage you’re welcome to choose any scenes from any characters. I’m still more focused on looking at people and actors at-large, and then adjusting scripts and characters later, if needed, around people/actors. … If it makes it easier, you can do one scene with the character that most matches you and then another scene with a different character.

2. Have freedom on interpretation, just within the general tone we discussed.

— I’m interested in seeing people’s own style and ideas on things, so I won’t give too much direction. The only thing to remember is that general tone of levity that we discussed with the “I Love Lucy” clip. As a reminder, even though Bound has heavier moments, I wrote the scripts with my favorite shows like I Love Lucy or Martin in mind.

• For another, more modern reference there was a mini-series from 2021 called “It’s A Sin” that had a matching tone. The series was ultimately about AIDS so it had some weight to it but there was definitely a silliness to the writing/characters.

3. Provide an accent option, if needed. Adjust dialogue, if needed.

— As mentioned, the “A” plan is to build international characters - from China, Nigeria, Russia, et al. So, if you need to, please provide an option with the appropriate accent. You can also do another version with your regular American, British or other, natural accent. … Also, feel free to adjust dialogue to better fit an accent. In fact, at this stage you have the freedom to adjust scenes at large if you’d like to see/try something different.

4. Tape a few minutes, however you can.

— I’m in no position to be picky, so please tape however you can, whether with a phone or a camera and whether it’s on your own or with a partner. Of course a blank or minimal background, with a shallow depth, would be preferred. Also, if you could be mostly off-book that would be ideal. … The length of tapes will vary, depending on what scenes you choose, but “a few minutes” should be sufficient for a couple of scenes.

• For suggestion, it could be two versions/takes of each scene, equaling four options overall.

Time for partner or group read(s). Maybe in-person meetings, if feasible.

June 22 — August 02

Finish in-person meetings. Have most, if not all, cast identified.

* Of course, this is all in conjunction with and dependent on how things go pitching and campaigning for the project over the coming months. As a final reminder, don’t worry if you have other projects lined up or in play. The plan will always be to work with the preferred cast (and main crew) on finding a future date that works for most people, if and when there’s funding.
